Forestry, along with agriculture and fisheries, contributes only 1% to the Brunei’s total GDP (2008).The country has a forest cover of 53% (2005), which is almost all primary forest; and this has undergone an annual change of  minus 0.7% between 1990-2005. The Brunei Forestry Department, which is part of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, is the primary government department which administers the nation’s forests. Its aim is to support the diversification of the sector, and managing its preservation through good management. The government has put conservation measures and targets ahead of exporting timber, of which it exports very little.
