There are approximately 8,000km of road throughout Guyana, of which only around 7% is paved. The majority of road infrastructure is located along the coastal belt. The 187km of rail network is dedicated entirely to the transport of ore. Air transport is central to the domestic economy as it provides a link between coastal areas and the densely forested hinterland. There around 100 airports scattered across the country, of which 10 are paved. Cheddi Jagan International Airport is the country’s primary airport, located 40km south of Georgetown in the city of Timehri.The country’s waterways also play an important role in the transportation of goods and people. There is approximately 1,600km of navigable river, primarily along the Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo rivers where passenger and cargo vessels operate.The largest ports are at Georgetown and Linden via which much of the country’s produce is exported. A coast-hopping service also runs between Georgetown and some smaller ports in the north.
