Prime Minister
The prime minister of Guyana is an elected member of the National Assembly who is appointed to office by the president. The prime minister functions as the principal assistant to the president in the discharge of executive functions and also leads government business in the National Assembly. The prime minister is a key member of the Cabinet, assisting in advising the president in the general direction of the government. In order to be chosen for the office of prime minister one must also be eligible to be elected president, as should the president’s office become vacant the prime minister assumes the role of president. The prime minister is also responsible for a ministerial portfolio during his term.
