Nauru has no native supplies of oil and gas, relying entirely upon imported diesel for energy production and water desalination. No major oil companies operate out of or have a presence in Nauru. Nauru’s import-dependent economy is affected particularly harshly by increasing fuel and transportation prices. In 2009 the country imported more than 1,000 barrels of crude oil and oil products a day.
