The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions is the national trade union centre in New Zealand, comprising over 350,000 union members from around 40 affiliated unions.

Major trade unions in the country include, the Public Services Association, the largest state sector union comprising over 59,000 people working in a range of public services; and the Maritime Union of New Zealand, representing the interest of seafarers, waterfront workers and other related workers in the country.

The legal basis for unions in New Zealand is set out in the 1908 Trade Unions Act. A minimum number of 15 members is required for the formation of a union in the country.
