Education Suppliers in South Africa

The textbook publishing market in South Africa is heavily competitive. The five largest publishers in the country have immense control over the market. Maskew Miller Longman Group is the largest publisher of academic books in South Africa, its primary subsidiary being Pearson Education. The other large publishers include Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Macmillan, and Heinemann (currently in the process of merging with Pearson). The Associated Distributors of Educational Supplies in Southern Africa (ADDESSA) is a body representing educational suppliers in their dealings with government departments, educational institutions and other interested parties. A noteworthy initiative is The Free High School Science Texts project, funded by the Shuttleworth Foundation. It supplies educational textbooks and supporting materials for the teaching of science and maths at secondary level.
