Civil society plays vital roles in the health sector, environment conservation, gender development and particularly in the response to natural disasters.

The relief assistance of NGOs was crucial during the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Up to 90% of the country sustained damage from the Hurricane. Post Ivan, international NGOs such as Oxfam have worked to build capacity for the country to proactively respond to future natural disasters.

The Bank and General Workers Union protects worker’s rights therefore making it one of the more influential trade unions in the country. The Grenada Trades Union Council (GTUC) is the national trade union centre and is also associated with many international and regional trade unions.
