The media in Tonga is considered by independent observers as free in part. The country’s constitution guarantees freedom of speech. Libel and defamation are finable offences. Tonga Chronicle is a government-owned newspaper published in Tongan and English and the Times of Tonga is an independent weekly. There are three radio stations serving around 61,000 radios. Radio stations include Radio Tonga 1 and Tonga Radio. Tonga also has one television station broadcasting to around 2,000 televisions; the main station is Tonga Broadcasting Commission.
