Forestry, along with agriculture and fishing, contributes 12% to the GDP of Belize (2008). 73% of the country’s landmass is covered in forest. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, around 40% of this forest is primary forest – much of which is protected by the government in reserves. In total, between 1990 and 2010, Belize lost 12.2% of its forest cover. Belize’s forests are bastions of bio-diversity, boasting a huge variety of animal and plant life. Forests are managed by the Forest Department, which aims to enforce policy and regulation for the sustainable management of the country’s forests.
