Belize is a net importer of goods and services. Net imports accounted for 8% of GDP in 2005. The average ad valorem tariff for imported goods is 10.8% (2008). The main exports are sugar, bananas, citrus, clothing, fish products, molasses, wood and crude oil; and the main imports are machinery and transport equipment, manufactured goods, fuels, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, beverages, and tobacco. The Belize Customs and Excise Department administers customs revenue. The importation of live animals, food, plants and veterinary vaccines requires a special permit issued by the Ministry of Agriculture.
