The state-owned Petronas dominates the upstream and downstream sectors of the country’s oil industry. It achieves this through partnerships with other international players, especially in the sector of exploration. Along with its other diversified concerns, Petronas is the largest company in Malaysia, ranking among the top 10 most profitable companies in Malaysia. It is also striving to expand internationally. Petroleum giants BP and Shell also operate in the country. It is estimated by the Centre for Public Policy Studies that oil and gas contribute 40% to the government’s total revenue (2008). The Malaysian Oil and Gas Services Council is the leading trade association in the sector.
