Regional & Local Government

Saint Lucia is divided into around 13 administrative districts, known as ‘quarters’, and one capital city, Castries. Amongst the separate quarters there are three town councils, six village councils and four district councils. Since local elections were suspended in 1979 the ministry responsible for local government has been responsible for determining the nomination of all councils. Since 1980 the functions and responsibilities of local government have been directed by centralised authorities, and many of the services they provide are performed in conjunction with other governmental agencies.
