Agriculture, forestry, hunting and fisheries contribute 31% of Uganda’s GDP (2007). Forest covers 18% of Uganda’s total land area (2005). The country depleted 26% of its forest reserves between 1990 and 2005. Only 30% of Uganda’s forests are protected, most of which are indigenous species. A vast 70% is under private ownership and not directly controlled by the government. Private industrial forest plantations in the country consist of both softwood and hardwood. The National Forest Authority is the principal agency responsible for the implementation of the national forest policy.
