Kalabo

The Kalabo district is located in the Western Province of Zambia. The population of the district was estimated at about 115,000 people as of 2000. The administrative capital is Kalabo, a small town on the plains west of the Zambezi River and the Barotse Floodplain, about 70 km from the border with Angola. This small town by the Luanginga River is the gateway to Liuwa Plain National Park. Kalabo is a rambling group of dwellings. The name is derived from the Lozi word silambo, meaning ‘paddling stick’.
