Nkonkobe Local Municipality

Nkobekobe, the isiXhosa name for the Winterberg mountain range, is a predominantly rural local municipality in the Amathole district, Eastern Cape. The main towns are Alice, Hogsback, Middeldrift, Seymore and Fort Beaufort. While Fort Beaufort is the seat of local government, Alice is often used to hold council meetings. Main economic sectors include agriculture, wholesale and retail trade, mining and quarrying, and construction. The area is known for the Fort Hare University as well as naturally occurring sulphur springs.
