Masilonyana Local Municipality

Masilonyana, meaning “freedom” in Setswana, is a local municipality in the Lejweleputswa district, Free State. The economy of Masilonyana is highly reliant on the sectors of mining and agriculture. The main towns and cities are Brandfort, Soutpan, Theunissen, Verkeerdevlei and Winburg. Theunissen, the seat of local government, has the only wine estate in the Free State. A popular tourist attraction in Masilonyana is the Florisbad National Quaternary Research Station, Provincial Heritage Site in Soutpan where the first archaic modern human skull was discovered.
