Kopanong Local Municipality

Kopanong, “meeting place” in Sesotho, is a local municipality in the Xhariep district, Free State. Agriculture is the largest contributor to the local economy, with wool and meat production forming the bulk of Kopanong’s farming industry. Trompsburg is the municipal capital and houses the second-largest shearing barn in South Africa. Tiger Canyons is a big cat sanctuary situated by Van der Kloof Dam, the second biggest lake in South Africa, near the town of Philippolis. Jagersfontein Mine, the biggest hand-excavated hole in the world with two of the world’s largest diamonds discovered there, now serves to attract tourists.
