City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality

The new City of Tshwane is the largest metropolitan municipality in South Africa. The population is concentrated in Pretoria, Soshanguve and Mamelodi. Pretoria, sometimes called “Jacaranda city” because of the thousands of Jacaranda trees or “Tshwane” due to a long-running proposed name change, is the executive capital of South Africa. The Union Buildings in Pretoria are the core of administration within the country and hold all presidential inaugurations, including that of Nelson Mandela. The city frequently hosts international performances at its State Theatre, while other attractions include the Science and Technology Museum and Pretoria’s two nature reserves.
