Gauteng is the by far the smallest province comprising 1.4 percent of South Africa’s land area, though is the largest province in terms of population size. The province is the heart of South Africa’s vibrant economy, contributing more than a third to the national economy and an unprecedented tenth to the GDP of the African continent. Gauteng’s most important sectors include financial and business services, logistics, communications and mining, with the best telecommunications and technology on the continent. Gauteng Province is divided into three metropolitan municipalities, namely the City of Johannesburg, the City of Tswane and the Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality, as well as two district municipalities which are further divided into seven local municipalities.
