Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality

Ekurhuleni, or “place of peace” in Tonga, is a metropolitan municipality forming the local government in the East Rand region and is one of the most densely populated areas in the country. Referred to as “Africa’s Workshop”, Ekurhuleni is home to many of the country’s factories and contributes around a quarter of the Gauteng economy. The municipality has a good network of transport, telecommunications and electricity grids which helps account for its large and diverse economy. OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park is Africa’s biggest airport and gateway into southern Africa, making Ekurhuleni the transportation hub of the country.
