Merafong City Local Municipality

Merafong City is a local municipality in the West Rand district, Gauteng. Population levels are highest in the townships of Khutsong, Kokosi and Carletonville. Merafong City holds some of the richest gold mines in the world, which were first discovered in the 1930s. Carletonville, established by the Gold Fields Ltd mining company in 1948, is one of the wealthiest gold-producers in the world while Western Deep Levels, a mine in Carletonville, is the deepest mine in the world. Several major roads provide access to Johannesburg and Cape Town.
