The district includes a large wilderness in the Luangwa valley, north east of the North Luangwa National Park, which is famous for its elephants, wildebeest, antelopes and bird life. Most of the districts population lives close to the Malawi border and shares tribal and cultural links with the people of the northern highlands of that country. The people of Chama belong mostly to the Senga tribe. Chama is known as a rice growing area, as well as fairly large cotton growing areas.
