Butaleja

Butaleja District, named for its chief town, is located in the Eastern Region of Uganda. Prior to 2005, the district was called Bunyole County and was part of Tororo District. The district holds two municipalities: Butaleja and Busolwe. The majority of people in the district are of Banyole, a Bantu tribe, ethnicity. The Banyole language of Lunyole has been listed as an endangered minority language by Makerere University.

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy in the district. Crop production includes maize, millet, bananas, cotton, rice, cassava, groundnuts, sorghum and matooke, while livestock rearing concerns cattle, goats, sheep, rabbits, pigeons, ducks, guinea fowl and pigs, among others.
