Butambala

Butambala District is located in the Central Region of Uganda. It is one of the newest districts in Uganda having officially started operating in 2010, prior to which it formed a part of the Mpigi District. The district was also formerly known as Butambala County, one of the eighteen counties that made up the Kingdom of Buganda. The Buganda tribe, represented by a drum and two spears, holds strong cultural roots in the district and its people are famous for the Kiganda dance.

The main economic sector within the district is agriculture. Small scale farmers produce plantain, maize, groundnuts, mangoes and sugarcane as main food crops. Livestock activities centre upon the rearing of cattle for local consumption as well as to generate income although sheep, goats and pigs are also reared. Almost all of the cattle in Butambala are owned by smallholder farmers. Milk is the main dairy product produced and is frequently exported as well as consumed locally.
