Kalungu

Kalungu, located in the Central Region of Uganda, was officially formed as a district in 2010. Easy access to Lake Victoria and River Katonga has helped establish fishing as the local economy’s mainstay, with most fish produced for domestic consumption and sale in local markets. The local fish market is large and accustomed to meeting high demands from neighbouring districts, incorporating stock from Lake Albert, Lake Kyoga and Albert Nile. Kalungu District has great aquaculture potential due to its many springs, rivers and gently sloping landscape. Subsistence farming is also a major factor contributing to the district’s economy, although it is mostly women who work in this field.

The River Katonga connects Lake Victoria, Lake Wamala, Lake George and Lake Edward on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Katonga Wildlife Reserve located along the banks of the river and protects a network of wetlands which are accessible by canoe or on foot. The reserve is home to over 40 species of mammals, including elephants, waterbucks, reedbucks, colobus monkeys, river otters, and the semi-aquatic web-hooved Sitatunga antelope. Over 150 species of birds, many of which are specific to wetlands, can also be found in the reserve.
