Kakamega County

Kakamega County is located in Western Kenya, and covers an area of 3,224 km2. The county gained the name as the word Kakagema translates into ‘pinch’, which was used to describe how Europeans colonists would eat the local food, ugali. The temperate climate of the county, on average 21°C, and with an average rainfall of about 1500mm per annum, the county is well suited to agriculture, which is the main economic activity. Sugar cane is the primary crop, and the county is home to the largest sugar producing firm in Kenya, known as Mumias Sugar. The main tourist destination is the Kakagema forest, which is home to a large variety of flora and fauna. The administrative capital of the county is Kakagema Town, which is fairly small with an estimated population of 76,000 people.
