Kirinyaga County

Kirinyaga is a county is situated in the former Central Province of Kenya. It is made up of four constituencies: Mwea, Gichugu, Ndia and Kirinyaga Central. The capital of the county is Kerugoya town.

The county is home to Mount Kenya, the highest mountain in the country and the second-highest in Africa. In the forests surrounding the mountain lies the Mount Kenya National Park, a listed UNESCO world heritage site and major tourist attraction. Elephants, Cape Buffalo and various monkeys are among the creatures that inhabit this park.

Similarly to nearby counties, Kirinyaga’s economy is founded on agriculture. A mix of agro and livestock farming takes place in the area, with the land in and surrounding the Mount Kenya National Park rich in volcanic minerals and a wide variety of flora. The trade and services sectors in the area have also been expanding over recent years. There is a large labour force in Kirinyaga, helping it to contribute significantly to the national economy.
