Trans Nzoia County

Trans Nzoia is a county is situated in the former Rift Valley Province of Kenya and shares a border with Uganda. It is made up of five constituencies: Kwanza, Endebess, Saboti, Kiminini and Cherenganyi. Kitale Town is the capital of the county.

Agriculture is the major economic sector in the county, which is often referred to as “the bread basket of Kenya” due to its large scale maize farms. Horticulture, fishing and the production of tea, coffee and wheat constitute the other main economic activities, with Kitale Town providing the centre of commerce for the county. As such, Trans Nzoia is considered to be one of the most food-secure counties in Kenya.

Tourist attractions are based around sites of natural beauty and diversity. Mount Elgon National Park on Mount Elgon, the second highest mountain in Kenya, is home to elephants, buffalos and various monkeys, such as the Blue Monkey, among other wildlife. The Kitale Nature Conservancy lets visitors camp among various types of birds and monkeys, go horse-riding through the conservancy and try boating, as well as see snakes, crocodiles and mutant animals. Nearby, the Saiwa Swamp National Park, Kenya’s smallest national park, houses the Sitatunga, a rare aquatic antelope.
