West Pokot County

West Pokot is a county is situated in the Rift Valley of Kenya. It is made up of four constituencies: Kapenguria, Sigor, Kacheliba and Pokot South. The capital of the county is Kapenguria Town. The Turkwel Hydro Power Plant, one of the main power sources in the country, is located in West Pokot. Communities in the county tend to practice a combination of mixed farming and nomadic pastoralism.

The Saiwa Swamp National Park – Kenya’s smallest national park which houses the Sitatunga, a rare aquatic antelope – is an attractive destination for eco-tourism while the Prison Museum, where the first president of Kenya was detained during the colonial era, also draws visitors to Kapenguria and the surrounding area. Recently, famous athlete Tegla Loroupe founded a Peace Academy which looks after orphans in West Pokot
